Articulate & Apply Perspective
The fourth core competency is the ability to articulate and apply a public service perspective through understanding the ethical perspectives that apply in public administration. This competency can be mastered by demonstrating that one understands the ethics involved in public service, as well as recognizing that pubic service workers are serving the public as a whole.
Opelika, AL Water Crisis Through the completion of this community report on the Opelika, AL water crisis I gained several different skills related to articulating and applying a public service perspective, as well as interacting in such a way that conveys this. By seeking out answers on how the community feels about the water taste in Opelika, Alabama, I was led to conduct non biased observations, interviews, surveys, and plan out a community participation event. In order to conduct these research strategies ethically, I had to gather perspective from the community as a whole, not just one group from it. I interviewed multiple people, observed different locations, planned the community participation event to be as accessible as possible, and finally distributed surveys both electronically and via mail, to ensure that I was covering the bulk of the community. Through this report, I gained skills that I will carry with me into the workforce, as I gather data on communities and make decisions to serve the public as a whole.

Why Public Service? Why public service? What values do you see as critical in the public management profession and why? In a class assignment, I wrote about how as I’ve gotten older I've begun to realize that public service workers and officials are normal people, just like the people from my town and me. If they could work in public service and make a difference in their community, then so can I. I went on to discuss five values that I thought were important when serving the public as a whole: respect, honesty, integrity, lawfulness, and ethics.
